Scanner 01 - traces of tracing
Type | Installation Year | 2024 Location | Rotterdam, Netherlands
Client | Weelde Rotterdam
The piece was created during a co-creation workshop held at Weelde, Rotterdam, in 2024. Studio-Method designed and fabricated a “scanning” device constructed from reused materials. This object, a hybrid between a crane and a drawing machine, featured a long stick mounted on a pivot point atop a pedestal. The pivot, offset from the center, amplified movements: a slight adjustment on one end resulted in a much larger movement on the other.
Using a series of hinges and simple, low-tech mechanisms, participants could attach a pencil to the short end of the stick to draw on a surface. They traced shapes of scrap materials or created symbols of their choice. Meanwhile, at the longer end, a swinging bottle filled with pigment moved freely, dripping and dancing across a large canvas.
After multiple participants engaged with the performance, the piece was left exposed to the elements for several days. Over time, the weather washed and aged the artwork, blending the individual traces and remnants into a unified, delicate composition. Like rocks gently smoothed by ocean waves, the marks and traces faded and weathered together in harmony.
